Urras Oighreachd Ghabhsainn (Galson Estate Trust) and Urras Oighreachd Chàrlabhaigh (Carloway Estate Trust) are working together with Lionel School, Sgoil an Taobh Siar, Shawbost School and Breasclete School. The aim of this partnership is to establish a Primary 7 pupils transition programme for children from the rural schools within the Galson Estate and Carloway Estate.

Tha Urras Oighreachd Ghabhsainn agus Urras Oighreachd Chàrlabhaigh ag obair còmhla ri Sgoil Lionail, Sgoil an Taobh Siar, Sgoil Shiaboist agus Sgoil Bhreascleit gus prògram a stèidheachadh a bhios a’ toirt sgoilearan air Clas 7 bho na sgoiltean dùthchail air oighreachd Ghabhsainn agus oighreachd Chàrlabhaigh còmhla mus tèid iad dhan àrd sgoil.

With support from the John Muir Trust, the primary 7 pupils will undertake the John Muir Discovery Award which is an environmental award scheme. It is non-competitive, inclusive and accessible based on; discovering a wild space, exploring it, working to conserve it and sharing their experience with others.

The pupils will come together for four days of activities in order to achieve the award. They will be mixed up in groups to allow them to build friendships with children from the other schools prior to moving up to secondary school. Pupils will be accompanied by school staff.

The activities will take place within the two estates and may include walking, environmental activities, cooking on open fires, orienteering, scavenger hunts, abseiling, mountain biking, beach clean ups and coastal path maintenance. On the final day, the pupils will prepare materials to present at an evening event where parents will be asked to attend. 2020 is the ‘Year of Coasts and water’. This theme will be incorporated into the programme with many of the activities taking part in coastal areas.

The programme will end with an awards evening where pupils will share their experiences with parents and receive their award.

The programme is funded entirely by Scottish Natural Heritage. Therefore, all transportation of pupils, arts and crafts materials, building materials, tools and logbooks will be covered by the funding. The John Muir Trust will also be supporting the programme throughout.
